But when you check your email in the morning, a number of other demands pour in, instant messages begin popping up like a game of whack-a-mole and people start dropping by for “a quick question” that will “only take a sec.” Suddenly, an hour has vanished after meeting other people’s needs while your project has gone untouched. How do people ever get anything done nowadays?

It’s a big question that doesn’t just affect our working days. Ultimately, it can derail our entire careers. After all, what you do day in and day out impacts how well you meet larger goals. It’s those milestones your career will be judged on.

“One of the questions I ask people a lot is how much quality thinking time do they get today, and define quality thinking time as ‘you’re able to focus deeply and achieve what you set out to achieve in the time you expect,’” says David Rock, director of the NeuroLeadership Institute and author of Your Brain at Work: Strategies for Overcoming Distraction, Regaining Focus, and Working Smarter All Day Long. “The number continues to decrease as I ask people. It’s not 20 or 10 or even five hours. For a lot of people it’s a couple hours a week if that. The downside of technology is that it’s getting harder and harder to focus.”

You want to excel in a way that requires people to sit up and take notice, but while that lofty advice sounds good, when it comes to the present moment, it can be hard to follow it in this age of distraction.
